Description
The Mucosal Simulator of Human Gastrointestinal Microbial Ecosystem (M-SHIME) has been increasingly applied across the literature to study the responses of human mucosal microbiota to various substances. This in vitro system enables multiple sampling of mucosal microbiota over a short timeframes (several days), which is not feasible in human studies. Consequently, M-SHIME provides a valuable platform for monitoring changes in mucosal microbiota over time.
This dataset originates from a 28-day experiment in which a simulation of balanced, dietary intervention and a parallel 14-day administration of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG was applied in M-SHIME, as well as in luminal SHIME (L-SHIME). The collected data demonstrated that the microbiota in M-SHIME responded to probiotic intervention in a manner similar to that observed in the L-SHIME system, however it reacted in a distinct way to fluctuations in the dietary nutrients. Notably, the microbiota in M-SHIME responded in a way consistent with observations reported in human studies. These findings confirm the utility of the M-SHIME platform for studying the responses of human mucosal microbiota to dietary interventions.
