FutuRSI ebnet den Weg. Sechs Gründe, warum eine deutsche Forschungssoftwareinstitution etabliert werden könnte und sollte

Dieses Papier fasst sechs Blogbeiträge zusammen, die durch das FutuRSI-Projekt im Oktober und November 2025 auf seiner Website veröffentlicht wurden. Die ersten Entwürfe dieser Beiträge entstanden nach 18 Interviews mit Expertinnen und Experten. Dieses Papier präsentiert Meinungen dazu, warum eine deutsche Forschungssoftwareinstitution etabliert werden sollte. Die Gründe dafür sind folgende: 1) Forschungssoftware ist ein zentraler Bestandteil der Forschungspraxis; 2) Forschungssoftwareentwicklung ermöglicht Karriereentwicklung und verbindet technische und fachliche Expertise; 3) Steigerung der Effektivität und Effizienz in der Forschungssoftwareentwicklung ist sowohl notwendig als auch möglich; 4) Bewährte nationale und internationale Referenzmodelle weisen den Weg nach vorne; 5) Eine nationale Forschungssoftwareinstitution kann nahtlos in das deutsche Forschungsökosystem integriert werden; und 6) Deutschland muss seinen Status als attraktiver Forschungsstandort mit exzellenter Forschungssoftware bewahren. Auf der Grundlage dieser sechs Argumente wird das FutuRSI-Projekt ein konkretes Konzept und einen Umsetzungsplan entwickeln und mit Interessengruppen in Kontakt treten, um deren Beteiligung zu erleichtern.

This paper compiles six blog posts that were published by the FutuRSI project on its website in October and November 2025. The first drafts of these posts were produced following 18 expert interviews. This paper presents opinions on why a German research software institution should be established. The reasons are as follows: 1) research software is a central component of research practice; 2) research software engineering enables career advancement and connects technical and domain expertise; 3) increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of research software development is both necessary and possible; 4) proven national and international reference models point the way forward; 5) a national research software institution can be seamlessly integrated into the German research ecosystem; and 6) Germany needs to preserve its status as an attractive research location with excellent research software. Building on these six arguments, the FutuRSI project will develop a concrete concept and implementation plan and engage with stakeholders, facilitating their participation.
