Deliverable D3.1 UNITA manual on multilingual programmes and micro-credentials
Description
Context and Objectives
This deliverable presents UNITA’s comprehensive framework for multilingual programmes and micro-creden-tials, advancing the Alliance’s vision of fostering personalized, multilingual, and international learning within the European Higher Education Area. It aims to define the UNITA à la carte initiative as well as the UNITA Degree and Micro-Credential Labels as quality instruments supporting the development of joint degrees, flexible study paths, and lifelong learning opportunities across partner institutions. The document contributes to the strategic objectives of UNITA by operationalizing tools for transnational education and recognition of learning achievements.
Methodology
The work draws upon EU policy experimentation on the European Degree Label and the collective design processes of the UNITA Task Teams 3.1 and 3.2. Methodological approaches include benchmarking analyses, stakeholder consultation, institutional mapping, and iterative validation of criteria and models. Practical implementation was guided by pilot activities and collaborative design workshops involving academic and administrative staff from all partner universities.
Results and Outcomes
The deliverable defines the UNITA Degree Label and its awarding process, aligned with the European Com-mission criteria, ensuring coherence with future European joint degrees. It also develops the UNITA à la carte model—an innovative approach enabling students to personalize international study paths through mod-ular learning units and shared courses. Significant achievements include the establishment of Mobility Win-dows, ICTU matching events, and the creation of joint and multiple degree pathways. Furthermore, the document outlines the UNITA Micro-Credential Label, catalogue, and business model, providing a structured mechanism for recognition, quality assurance, and scalability of short learning experiences across the Alli-ance.
Impact and Applications
The proposed frameworks enhance institutional interoperability, promote multilingual and intercultural com-petencies, and strengthen UNITA’s role in shaping the European Education Area. They serve as practical instruments for the design of joint curricula, mutual recognition of learning outcomes, and integration of lifelong learning into degree structures. The implementation of labels and catalogues will facilitate sustain-able innovation in transnational education, support the development of lifelong learning education policies at partner institutions and support policy convergence among European universities.
Conclusions and Next Steps
The deliverable consolidates UNITA’s progress toward the creation of a European inter-university campus, providing replicable models for degree and micro-credential integration. Next steps include the full opera-tionalization of the UNITA labels, the expansion of the à la carte offer, and the co-development of flagship joint degrees by 2027. Continuous monitoring, quality enhancement, and stakeholder engagement will guide the transition toward a legally recognized European Degree framework.
