The Importance of Primary Health Care in the Prevention of Chronic Diseases
Description
Primary Health Care (PHC), as a major public policy, is the foundation of public health systems and plays a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention, and the continuous and comprehensive care of the population. The prevention of noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, is one of the priorities of PHC due to their high prevalence and impact on global morbidity and mortality. This academic essay, based on an integrative literature review, analyzes the essential role of PHC in reducing hospitalizations, improving quality of life, and ensuring the sustainability of health systems. Emphasis is placed on health education, healthy lifestyle promotion, care coordination, and social determinants management, as well as the success of Brazil’s Family Health Strategy in addressing chronic conditions. The expansion and qualification of PHC are necessary for strengthening equitable, efficient, and person-centered health systems.
