Vásquez METADATA ==================================================================== DATASET: Sex differences in molt timing, duration, and intensity in Rufous-collared Sparrows (Zonotrichia capensis) from central Chile ==================================================================== DESCRIPTION ----------- This dataset contains field data used to evaluate differences in molt parameters between male and female Rufous-collared Sparrows (Zonotrichia capensis) from central Chile. Variables include molt scores for all primary and secondary feathers, the number of flight feathers actively molting, and feather growth rate estimated through photo-ptilochronology. Data were collected between September 2018 and january 2020 as part of a study on molt strategies and sex-related differences in molt timing and intensity. -------------------------------------------------------------------- VARIABLE METADATA -------------------------------------------------------------------- Variable name: Sex Description : Biological sex of the individual bird. Data type : Categorical Units : None Possible values: M = male; F = female Notes : Determined by morphological characteristics (cloacal protuberance or brood patch and-or DNA). Variable name: Date Description : Date of capture or observation. Data type : Date Units : dd/mm/yyyy Notes : Corresponds to the date when molt data were collected. Variable name: Moult_score_complete Description : Vector of molt scores (0–5) representing the state of each primary and secondary feather. Each position in the vector corresponds to a specific flight feather in a fixed order. Data type : String (sequence of integers) / Ordinal Units : Score 0–5 Possible values: 0 = old feather 1 = feather missing (shed) 2 = new feather less than one-third grown 3 = new feather one- to two-thirds grown 4 = new feather more than two-thirds grown 5 = fully grown new feather Format example: 332100000000000 Notes : The vector contains one digit per feather, arranged in the same order for all individuals (from the innermost primary to the outermost secondary). Variable name: Number_of_flight_feather_molting Description : Total number of flight feathers (primaries, secondaries, and rectrices) actively molting. Data type : Integer Units : Count Notes : Sum of feathers with molt scores between 2 and 4. Variable name: Feather_growth_rate_mm Description : Mean growth rate of feathers estimated through photo-ptilochronology. Data type : Continuous (numeric) Units : millimeters per day (mm/day) Notes : Calculated as the average width of at least three consecutive growth bands from the same rectrix. -------------------------------------------------------------------- ADDITIONAL METADATA -------------------------------------------------------------------- Taxon : Zonotrichia capensis (Rufous-collared Sparrow) Geographic coverage : Central Chile [33°29'49" S- 70°54'39" W] Temporal coverage : [September 2018- January 2020] Sampling method : Mist-netting, birdbanding and ptilochronology.
