How Much Reality Is There Woven into the Imaginary?

  • 1. Microvita Research e.V.

Description

From the invention of zero to the emergence of the imaginary unit, mathematics has steadily expanded the boundaries of what can be called real. Each new number opened a hidden dimension of thought — from absence, to inversion, to rotation. When the symbol i = √−1 entered arithmetic, it quietly transformed mathematics into a geometry of becoming: quantities could now turn, resonate, and interfere.
This essay follows that transformation beyond mathematics. It shows how the imaginary, once seen as a fiction, became the structural form of potentiality — the invisible curvature through which reality unfolds. Complex numbers thus prefigure a universal logic of relation: coherence arises not from magnitude but from phase, not from substance but from orientation.
So to ask how much reality is woven into the imaginary is to inquire how deeply potentiality is embedded in existence itself — and how consciousness, as the universe’s reflective motion, participates in shaping the passage from possibility to form.
