Description
This dataset, Visual and Written Sources on Traditional Clothing in Riga During the 18th and 19th Centuries (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.16995555), is released as an RDF dump in N-Triples (NT) and Turtle (TTL). It represents a 2025 snapshot of the broader Secondary Sources of Dress and Textile History, restricted to materials relating specifically to Riga.
The data brings together visual and written depictions of common people’s clothing, with emphasis on traditional garments and accessories. Since few original items from Riga survive, the sources—over one hundred eighteenth-century drawings by Johann Christoph Brotze, as well as early nineteenth-century paintings and lithographs by Carl Traugott Fechhelm, Johann von Radetzky, Theodor Heinrich Rickmann, Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl, and Carl Gotthard Hess—offer crucial evidence for dress history. Each record includes institutional holdings, inventory number, author, title, description, image type, place, and date.
Although archived on Zenodo as raw RDF, the dataset is best explored via TextileBase (https://reprexbase.eu/textilebase), which presents entries in their relational context (e.g. from an individual figure, to a plate, to an entire volume). For direct reuse, any entity can be fetched in multiple serializations—Turtle, N-Triples, RDF/XML, JSON-LD, JSON—by changing the file extension of its URL, e.g. https://reprexbase.eu/textilebase/Special:EntityData/Q801.ttl.
