Readme This repository contains the following files: ################################# EBV list overview.xlsx -> An Excel file containing the 84 Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) as identified by EuropaBON, with their individual characteristics (e.g. entity type, EBV class, and spatiotemporal resolutions). Original source: https://github.com/EuropaBON/EBV-Descriptions/wiki ################################# Links between EBVs and EU policies.pdf -> A PDF document summarizing the links between each EBV and the EU policies, specified as a direct or indirect link, and as a partial or complete link. Definitions used to describe the links are provided in Table S1 of the PDF, and the links are provided in Table S3-S5 of the PDF. Original sources: EU policy documents as provided in Table S2 of the PDF. ################################# Monitoring sample size examples.xlsx -> An Excel file containing examples of monitoring sample sizes (e.g. number of sites, transects, photos, landscape elements, polygons, or water bodies) from EU-wide monitoring schemes. Original sources: various sources as provided in the file. ################################# Number freshwater monitoring sites.xlsx -> An Excel file containing the number of monitoring sites in EU freshwaters, including different water bodies (river segments, lakes, coastal and transitional waters) that are sampled for various biological quality elements in the context of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Original sources: Data extracted from: https://tableau-public.discomap.eea.europa.eu/views/WISE_SOW_SWB_QualityElement_qeMonitoringResults/SWB_QualityElement_qeMonitoringResults?%3Aembed=y&%3AisGuestRedirectFromVizportal=y ################################# Primary and supplementary monitoring techniques per EBV.xlsx -> An Excel file containing the primary monitoring techniques and supplementary approaches for each EBVs. Original sources: expert assessments collected in online surveys conducted during the EuropaBON workshop on EBV workflows (https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.9.e109120) ################################# Priorities EBV workflows.xlsx -> An Excel file containing the priorities for data integration and modelling for developing EBV workflows in the context of a European Biodiversity Observation Network, seperated for freshwater, marine and terrestrial EBVs. Original sources: expert assessments collected during the EuropaBON workshop on EBV workflows (https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.9.e109120) ################################# Relative importance of monitoring methods.xlsx -> An Excel file containing the survey answers on the relative importance of different monitoring techniques (DNA-based methods, structured in-situ monitoring, citizen science, digital sensors, satellite remote sensing, and aerial remote sensing) for monitoring individual EBVs. Workshop participants were asked to assess whether each monitoring technique is of central importance for each EBV at a European scale. Relative importance is indicated with % answers (yes, partially, and no). Original sources: expert assessments collected in online survey conducted during the EuropaBON workshop on EBV workflows (https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.9.e109120) ################################# Summary_EBV_Characteristics.xlsx -> An Excel file containing four tables (sheets) that summarize the characteristics of EBVs as identified by EuropaBON, namely the EBV types, the taxonomic groups and other entities, the spatial resolutions, and the temporal resolutions. Original source: Raw data were extracted from the EuropaBON EBV list (https://github.com/EuropaBON/EBV-Descriptions/wiki) ################################# GIS_data_spatial_gaps.zip Contains four folders with GIS data which exemplify examples of existing spatial gaps in European biodiversity monitoring: -> A_terrestrial_butterfly_monitoring -> B_rivers_benthic_monitoring -> C_lakes_freshwater_monitoring -> D_marine_monitoring Each folder contains a *.shp file (for use in GIS), a *.tif file (showing the map), and a *.txt file with metadata information.
