Tele control of pooled DRE systems for grid balance reserve applications (DRE4BalanceReserve)

Description

The DRE4BalanceReserve project team, aims to test a controlled local system (CLS) gateway
application that connects decentralized PV inverter systems to a central pooling system, ena
bling frequency balance reserve through aggregated small-scale PV systems.
The project focuses on developing a robust and efficient translation mechanism between the
SunSpec protocol used by decentralized PV systems and the IEC 61850 standard used by the
central pooling system. This translation layer is critical in ensuring that the aggregated power
and reactive power commands from the central system are correctly interpreted and executed
by the decentralized PV systems.
The research motivation for the CLS gateway application is to test a solution for connecting
decentralized PV inverter systems to a central pooling system, enabling frequency balance
reserve through aggregated small-scale PV systems. The project aims to investigate the fea
sibility of using the CLS gateway application in real-world scenarios and to evaluate its perfor
mance under various network conditions.
The project will utilize the state-of-the-art German encrypted smart meter infrastructure and
will be tested in a laboratory environment within a CHIL testbed. The tests will be performed in
a controlled manner, with various network impairments introduced to simulate real-world con
ditions.
The project's objectives included:
• Investigating the CLS gateway application's performance under various network condi
tions,
• Evaluating the feasibility of using the CLS gateway application in real-world scenarios,
• Developing a robust and efficient translation mechanism between the SunSpec protocol
and the IEC 61850 standard, and
• The project's results will contribute to the development of a more efficient and reliable smart
grid system, enabling the integration of decentralized PV systems into the grid and provid
ing frequency balance reserve through aggregated small-scale PV systems.
