Data Study Group Final Report: Centre for Postdoctoral Development in Infrastructure, Cities, and Energy (C-DICE) - A Cost-Effective Roadmap for Achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050

Description

Data Study Groups are a two week-long event at The Alan Turing Institute bringing together some of the country’s top talent from data science, artificial intelligence, and wider fields, to analyse real-world data science challenges.

Achieving a net zero energy system requires strategic planning of infrastructure transitions. This study presents a software tool that generates optimal transition plans for the UK power sector. Given a set of predefined decarbonisation milestones, the tool constructs a roadmap that specifies which power plants should be built, expanded, repurposed, or decommissioned (retired). This roadmap is designed to gradually transform the existing energy system, ensuring milestones are met at a minimal cost.
