In a distributed system, the synchronicity of the entire system to a common time standard is a key aspect of ensuring reliable timing, and the PTP-based timing network is a widely used when the synchronization requirement ranges from μs to ns level. On the other hand, due to the lack of unifying diverse time formats and validating the synchronicity of PTP devices, filling the traceability gap between the PTP devices and the NMI references becomes an urgent need from a metrological point of view. This paper develops a novel method for calibrating a pair of PTP clocks in the master-slave hierarchy. A calibration model is first proposed, where two reference planes corresponding to the PTP and the PPS pulse format, respectively, are defined. Taking the two reference planes into account separately, the internal latencies of the PTP clock pair will be calibrated by the proposed calibration method. As a result, both PTP and PPS ports can be unified into a common reference. Furthermore, by taking the prior calibrated PTP clock pair as the “golden calibration pair”, all the timing ports in PTP devices under the same network can be calibrated and hence traceable to the same reference.
