Description

Abstract.

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders are a group of conditions involving the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles, nerves, and tendons. On some occasions, this group of pathologies generates pain, discomfort and difficulties in eating and speaking, which affects academic social activities in children and adolescents. Many authors have indicated that the causes of this condition are idiopathic. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of temporo mandiblurars disorders (TMD) in children aged 5 to 14 years who were evaluated by the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative, nonexperimental, observational, and analytical study with a nonprobabilistic, multicenter sample was conducted. The inclusion criteria were as follows: patients with a medical history who provided informed consent and who presented with joint noise, pain on palpation in the masticatory muscles, alterations in mouth opening, and Axis I/Axis II assessment scores. Results: A total of 1052 participants were included in this study. A higher proportion of participants was observed in the 10–12 year-age group (25.29%) and ≥13 years age group (33.46%), which represented more than half of the study population (58.75%). The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to examine the normality of the ordinal variable W = 0.3493 (p < 0.05), and the Shapiro-Wilk test value was 0.35 (p<0.05). Conclusion: The early recognition of the signs and symptoms of this condition can prevent long-term complications.

Keywords: Adolescents, children, muscles, prevalence, comorbid temporomandibular disorders.
