Gamifying the past: embodied LLMs in DIY archaeological video games
Description
This is the supplementary materials for the paper:
"Gamifying the past: embodied LLMs in DIY archaeological video games"
by Mikkel Nørtoft, Daniela Hofmann, and Rune Iversen
We include here the Supplementary Materials document detailing:
- further technical aspects of making the game,
- a list of useful resources and tutorials
- individual descriptions of game testing sessions,
- all the texts for Convai character backstories, knowledge banks, etc. so they can be recreated even if the Convai characters should not be available.
Simply create a Convai account (free), create new character, and copy the character prompt and knowledge bank texts (link each to the relevant character(s)) in the character's interface on Convai,
and then copy/paste the character ID into the Metahuman blueprint's character ID (inside Unreal Engine)
- one separate photogrammetry model of the dolmen (Klausebølle from Langeland, Denmark) used as "portal" in the game
(other dolmen photogrammetry models are included in the Unreal Engine project file in this repository and will be uploaded to Sketchfab as well).
- Additional references for the knowledge bank
We also include:
- a visual guide (slide show pdf) to recreate a minimal example of creating a metahuman character, adding it to a preset level,
creating a Convai character and linking the Convai character to the Metahuman in Unreal Engine, and converse with it about an object in the game (using the Mikkeli Cathedral in Finland as example).. This works for Unreal Engine 5.5. so some details may change for future versions.
- All knowledge banks used divided in separate files as they were at time of publication.
These, along with the backstories given in the Supplementary Materials.docx, can be used to recreate the Convai characters if they should not be available to others on Convai due to usage limits.
- an uncut video screen recording of the gameplay in both levels by Mikkel Nørtoft
- an additional video of the two Metahuman/Convai characters discussing aspects of dolmen building
Dolmen Game IMPORTANT technical information: To play the game in the sample project, download Convai, Metahuman and DaySequence plugins (free) from Fab.com, install and enable any missing plugins: Water (and any extensions) Buouyancy Convai Metahuman PCG (with extensions) DaySequence
You may have to also enable Hardware Raytracing and Megalights inside the Project Settings if you see a lot of faulty shadows.
See also minimal (or recommended) hardware requirements in our main paper's Table 1 To run the Convai characters create an account on Convai and input your own API key under project settings > Convai in UE 5.
To recreate our charactrers, you may have to create new character, and copy the character prompt and our knowledge bank texts (link each to the relevant character(s)) in the character's interface on Convai,
and then copy/paste the character ID into the Metahuman blueprint's character ID (inside Unreal Engine)
