Interactive Map of Medieval Female Illuminators and Manuscript Centres in Europe

This interactive map was designed and developed by Prof. Carla Rossi as part of her research for the monograph Beyond the Margins. Female Illuminators in Medieval and Renaissance Europe (Ethics International Press, 2025).
It provides a geographic and structured overview of the main European centres of manuscript production where documented evidence of female scribes and illuminators exists, from the 12th to the 16th century.
The map is hosted by the Organisation pour la Protection des manuscrits Médiévaux (OProM) as part of its mission to protect and promote the heritage of European manuscripts.
The dataset is based on codicological and historical sources collected between 2023 and 2025.
