The Worship of Kunumolagha Deity of Eniwari Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State

In this paper, we have tried to discuss the worship of Kunumolagha deity of Eniwari community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. This deity in question is believed to have assisted the Eniwari people tremendously in many areas of their life, but it has not been researched on and its activities documented. This is the problem that the study has tried to solve. The researcher used the historical and phenomenological methods to guide the study. In the area of the gathering of data for the study, the researcher resorted to oral interview and the consultation of the library for this purpose. The deity according to our findings is believed to have assisted the Eniwari people tremendously, for example it assisted them to win their wars that they fought with their neighboring communities in those days of inter-village war fare, it also blesses them with rich agricultural produce and pumper fish catch for the fishermen among them. The god is also believed to be the god of protection to them against all evil vices for example attacks from witches, wizards, sorcerers and even deities that people have invoked to harm Eniwari person. Its is also the god that have enabled Eniwari community to produce renound wrestling champions in the past and the present. The god has also been attributed to have been responsible for the longivity of the people’s life span. The totem of the god is Adumu, the python snake and it’s a taboo to kill or eat this snake as delicacy. From our findings, the author is submitting that the existence of the deity or the worship of the deity be encouraged among the Eniwari people. This is because of its beneficence disposition among the people. It is part of their cultural heritage and so it should not be allowed to go into extinction like how most of the deities in Ijaw land, have experienced.
