Sustainable Networking
Description
This record contains lecture material for two 1h30 courses on Sustainable Networking.
In addition to the slides in his record, you may consult the transcripts for my presentation of that material at ETH Zürich at the end of 2024.
- Context: We introduce the subtle but fundamental context for discussing sustainability through a case study: What is the carbon footprint of 1h of Netflix streaming?
This lecture is mostly high-level and accessible to a broad technical audience. It does not require a lot of networking background.
Transcripts: https://adv-net.ethz.ch/transcripts/sustainability_context/ - Applications: We present some sustainability challenges in networks today (primarily ISP networks) and explore potential solutions for reducing their energy footprint.
This lecture addresses an audience with basic networking knowledge (e.g., having followed a B.Sc level introductory course on networking).

Changelog
v2.0: Doubling of the lecture material.
- The first lecture has deepened the context around sustainability
- The second lecture goes a lot more in technical networking-related details, including our latest research findings.
- Added links to the online transcripts
v1.2: Typo fixing and minor polishing
v1.1: Minor corrections
- corrected the ambiguity between electricity and energy
- removed DVFS from the "sleeping" technique (technically, it's a rate-adaptation method)
- minor formating polish
