Ọmọkùnrin: A Glimmer into the Trajectories of the Masculine Gender in Africa and Other Parts of the World; Perceptions and Unending Expectations

  • 1. ROR icon University of Missouri

Description

Literally, Ọmọkùnrin refers to a male child or a man but in the real sense, the word Ọmọkùnrin sinks deeper than its apparent letters and sends a profound alert on the dangers of slacking and drums gongs of readiness and expected eagerness to kiss and embrace the worse, and spills the heavy expectations on the male gender, especially in Africa, and in other countries as well. Thus, the sound of Ọmọkùnrin conveys a bag of duties and responsibilities that a man must shoulder. Regardless of his wills, choices, and desires, this innocent young boy who came into the world with a beautiful and promising smile will soon be bent to be fit to meet up with the demands of being a male; Ọkùnrin, lest he risks a disapproval and rebuff from the society. In this book, I attempt to carefully dissect masculine dynamics, the chaos of the traditional masculine gender role and its unsettling consequences, patriarchy and the price men pay for it, gender equality's inauthenticity, the neglect of the boy child and his perceived immunity against threat and harassment, gangsterism and what can be done, the role African proverbs play in enhancing masculine stress, and channeling a path to becoming better and fostering a better society.
