# [Title] Water Quality Data from GESTA Project (TED2021-130315B-I00): Sustainable management of Water and Soil in Atlantic rural areas under climate-changing conditions ## Date 2025-02-03 ## Authors Francisco Javier Samper Calvete, Marta García Souto, Luis Montenegro Pérez, Acacia Naves García-Rendueles, Aitor García Tomillo, Sara Martínez Picado, Bruno Pisani Veiga, Alba Mon López, Brais Sobral Areán, Antonio Paz González, Marcos Lado Liñares ## Description This file has been performed within the GESTA Project (TED2021-130315B-I00) which is a 2021 Spanish project of the State Research Plan for "STRATEGIC PROJECTS AIMED AT THE ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION AND THE DIGITAL TRANSITION" within the framework of the State Programme to Promote Scientific-Technical Research and its Transfer. The responsible researchers of the project were Francisco Javier Samper Calvete and Manuel López Vicente from the Interdisciplinary Center of Chemistry and Biology (CICA) at the University of A Coruña (UDC) in A Coruña (Spain). The file contains water quality data taken at the pilot plots and basins studied in the project: Sobrado dos Monxes lagoon, Abegondo study area and Brabío sub-catchment. ## Licence Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International ### Data types and file formats Table with water quality data. The four specific objectives of the GESTA project included: 1) Mitigation of climate change (CC) by good agricultural practices to capture greenhouse gases. Quantification of the effect of implementing sustainable agricultural practices (cover crop, mulching, reduced tillage) in permanent crops on soil organic carbon content and soil water storage capacity. Evaluation and implementation in Brabío site (Coruña province). Upscaling results analysis including the current land use policy and planning of possible alternative scenarios to increase the water storage capacity in the soil as well as the resilience of agricultural, livestock and forestry soils in the face of adverse CC scenarios. 2) Adaptation strategies of groundwater spring catchments to CC in Atlantic rural areas. Evaluation of the effects of CC on soil water storage, surface water, groundwater recharge, groundwater heads, and groundwater discharges at streams and springs. Analysis of cost-effective green alternatives for groundwater supply in rural areas to alleviate the effects of CC. Evaluation and implementation in spring catchments already analyzed in previous studies in Abegondo municipality (Coruña province) (LIFE Rural Supplies & LIFE AQUAPLANN). 3) Assessment of wetlands water needs and resilience against CC. Development of methodologies for assessing the water needs of wetlands in current conditions and in a CC context. Proposal of measures to alleviate the effects of CC on wetlands in low-flow drought periods and extreme floods. Application to Sobrado dos Monxes lagoon site (Coruña province). 4) Prevention of soil and water contamination by non-point source pollution in farmlands with intensive manure application. Assess water and soil pollution risks induced by soil particle delivery and washout and by fertilizers transport as components of an integrated whole. Analyze source, role, and behavior of substances in soil and water, distinguishing natural and anthropogenic sources of nutrients, organic manures and heavy metals. Special attention was paid to the transport and fate of substances by using remote sensing, field geophysical, hydrogeological, hydrodynamic, hydrochemical and isotopic data. Groundwater nitrate contamination was monitored in areas affected by manure application and in areas not affected by pollution in Abegondo municipality.
