Kırgız Halk Kültüründe Kutsal Bir İçecek Olarak Kımız
Description
The foods and beverages consumed by societies are shaped by their geography, traditional lifestyles, and cultural rituals. These elements are also influenced by religious beliefs, which play a significant role in conferring a cultural identity on these items. Frequently found in the rich lexicon of Turkic tribes and recognized as a national and historical beverage of the Turks, Kumiss occupies a special place in social and communal life due to the influence of ancient Turkic beliefs, a nomadic lifestyle, and livestock farming. In Shamanistic traditions, offerings of food and beverages as bloodless sacrifices to deities carry sacred significance and are referred to as "saçı." This perspective gives these items a ritualistic and sacred dimension within Turkic culture. Kumiss, a fermented dairy product, not only serves as a nutritious drink but also emerges as an integral part of religious and social rituals. This study examines the role of kumiss in Kyrgyz folk culture from a multidimensional perspective. Kumiss is evaluated as an indispensable element of Kyrgyz dining, a sacred beverage in rituals, a significant cultural symbol in folk beliefs and practices, a rich lexical component of Kyrgyz Turkic, a therapeutic tool in folk medicine, and a meaningful figure in Turkic mythology and epic narratives. This study extensively presents the social and cultural values of kumiss, particularly through the rituals and daily practices observed among the Kyrgyz people. Special emphasis is also placed on the historical evolution of kumis and its reflections in Kyrgyz society.
