International Insights into Diamond Open Access - How Does DOA Work Across Borders?
Description
The BMBF-funded project open-access.network invited to an information event as part of the information series "Shaping the Open Access transformation sustainably. Diamond OA as an alternative":
International Insights into Diamond Open Access - How Does DOA Work Across Borders?
Diamond Open Access (DOA) aims to address inequities in scholarly publishing through several key mechanisms. By eliminating publication fees, it seeks to reduce elitist selection practices and to mitigate both institution-specific and international disparities in access to publishing opportunities. As a global movement, DOA inherently fosters international connections: digital publications are accessible worldwide and it allows researchers to share their work independent of their home institutions. Various international initiatives are currently driving the growth of DOA, providing valuable insights into the diverse global landscape of the DOA movement. Yet challenges remain. What obstacles hinder international collaboration in this field? What kind of infrastructure would best support effective global cooperation? And what lessons can we learn from existing DOA experiences? This event explored these questions, shedding light on the possibilities and pathways for a more internationally inclusive and accessible future in scholarly publishing.
Our speakers:
- Fernanda Beigel: Principal researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council CONICET and Director of the Research Center on the Circulation of Knowledge (CECIC, based in National University of Cuyo, Argentina)
- Caroline Edwards (Birkbeck, University of London): Executive Director of the Open Library of Humanities and Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Literature and Culture
- Pierre Mounier (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales): OPERAS co-coordinator and DIAMAS project Co-PI
At the event, we discussed the following topics:
- Dystopia: What if DOA became extinct?
- Utopia: What would a global DOA revolution look like?
- Why does DOA have to be global?
- What are the weaknesses and risks of global DOA initiatives?
- What are the special challenges with regard to DOA publications or initiatives in France, in the UK and in Argentina?
