Description
In this study, it was aimed to determine the perception of self-efficacy in receptive language skill of B2 level students who learn Turkish as a foreign/second language. The sample of the study was determined as foreign students learning Turkish as a foreign language at a foundation university and the sample was 60 students at B2 language level. The method of the study is exploratory mixed design. The quantitative data obtained in the study were analyzed with SPSS and focus interviews were conducted for qualitative data. Independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA test were used for SPSS. The study was limited to the comprehension-discernment items in Varışoğlu and Sevim's (2022) “Perception of self-efficacy in receptive language skills for learners of Turkish as a foreign language” scale. Most of the students stated that they could understand Turkish phrases in formal or private conversations. This finding shows that students at level B2 feel quite competent in using Turkish phrases in formal and private settings. Some of the students stated that they could understand the phrases most of the time, a few of them could understand them sometimes, a very small number of them could understand them rarely and a very small number of them could not understand them at all. The skills that the students felt quite proficient in were; understanding phrases, understanding basic words in daily life, understanding question expressions based on tone of voice, distinguishing between positive and negative sentences in text/speech, selecting specific information in visuals, understanding expressions of emotion in text/speech, understanding the topic of the text/speech, understanding the main idea of the text/speech, understanding the message given through body language. The skills that the students did not feel sufficiently competent were; understanding the texts or speeches for problem solving, understanding the expressions of emotion in the text/speech, selecting specific information in the visuals, understanding the topic of the text/speech, understanding the main idea of the text/speech, and understanding the message given by voice intonations. In conclusion, the findings of the study show that the mean self-efficacy perception scores of the participants in Comprehension-Detection are not affected by demographic variables such as gender, age, geography of origin, mother tongue and language family.
