Challenges and Opportunities for FAIR Image Data in Latin American Bioimaging - Insights from the Data Science for Bioimaging Working Group
Description
Dr. Adán Guerrero presents here the unique challenges the Latin American Bioimaging (LABI) community faces in achieving FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles in image data management. This presentation will explore the establishment of the Data Science for Bioimaging Working Group during the LABI 2024 meeting, where participants from diverse Latin American countries shared their experiences and challenges in image data handling. Key issues discussed include the lack of funding for infrastructure, data storage limitations, the absence of knowledge about standard guidelines, and insufficient training in software for image analysis. The presentation will outline proposed actions to address these issues, such as increasing training capacity at different levels, improving access to high-performance computing, and fostering collaborations with the Global Bioimaging Community. The goal is to develop long-term strategies to enhance FAIR image data practices in Latin America and align them with global standards.
The presentation was given at the foundingGIDE Community Meeting in Okazaki, Japan (31 October–01 November 2024). foundingGIDE: founding a Global Imaging Data Ecosystem is a EU Horizon-funded project between Euro-BioImaging ERIC, EMBL, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy), German BioImaging, Global BioImaging, RIKEN (Japan), Microscopy Australia and Australian National Imaging Facility.
