Creating a scientific workflow to manage ancient Italian texts

Managing and analysing large collections (corpora) of textual materials is a complex task that involves both technological and scholarly considerations. Humanists (i.e.: Philologists, Palaeographers and Codicologists) not only extract information from the texts’ contents but also examine visual (i.e.: layout, mise-en-page) and material (i.e. physical) characteristics of their containers (i.e.: printed books and manuscripts), including the structure of the text, the materials used, the layout of the words on the page, and any annotations or notes. Developing efficient workflows to handle these diverse aspects is a significant challenge in the field of digital humanities.

DARIAH.it is one of the 4 RIs participating in the H2IOSC project, focussing on the needs expressed by the scientific community working on ancient Italian texts and medieval manuscripts: it aims to provide researchers with digital tools supporting knowledge extraction, management and sharing, and allowing them to implement various kinds of scientific workflows, including one for creating digital scholarly editions of ancient Italian texts (approximately ranging from the 10th Century up to the death of Boccaccio)

Abstract (Italian)

Gestire e analizzare grandi raccolte di materiali testuali (corpora) è un compito complesso che attraversa considerazioni sia tecnologiche che accademiche. Gli umanisti (filologi, paleografi, codicologi, ecc.) non solo estraggono informazioni dai contenuti dei testi, ma esaminano anche le caratteristiche visive (per esempio layout, mise-en-page) e materiali (per esempio fisiche) dei loro contenitori (per esempio libri stampati e manoscritti), tra cui la struttura del testo, i materiali utilizzati, il layout delle parole sulla pagina e qualsiasi annotazione o commento. Sviluppare flussi di lavoro efficienti per gestire questi diversi aspetti è una sfida significativa nel campo delle discipline umanistiche digitali.

DARIAH.it è una delle 4 Infrastrutture di ricerca che partecipano al progetto H2IOSC, focalizzato sulle esigenze espresse dalla comunità scientifica che lavora su testi italiani antichi e su manoscritti medievali: mira a fornire ai ricercatori strumenti digitali che supportino l'estrazione, la gestione e la condivisione della conoscenza e consentano loro di implementare vari tipi di flussi di lavoro scientifici, tra cui uno per la creazione di edizioni accademiche digitali di testi italiani antichi (che vanno approssimativamente dal X secolo fino alla morte di Boccaccio).
