Calliopsis (Perissander) anomoptera Michener 1942

Description

Calliopsis (Perissander) anomoptera Michener, 1942

[Holotype: AMNH; ♂ Picacho Pass, Arizona, US; August 7, 1940]

Calliopsis anomoptera is a unique bee named for the abnormally shaped wings present in only the male. It specializes on pollen from plants in the family Euphorbiaceae in the genus Euphorbia L. (Fowler 2020, Shinn 1967). This species is widely distributed across the SD and Shinn (1967) reported its presence in the Gulf Coast region of BCS. We examined two males collected in October 1997 from La Sierra de San Francisco in the southern Central Desert (BBSL). See fig. 32.
