HANZE v2.4 flood impact and attribution model

  • 1. PIK

Description

This is the flood impact model of project FloodDrivers dedicated to creating a pan-European database of long-term drivers of flood risk. The functionalities are as follows:

(a) creates high-resolution (100 m) maps of land cover/use, population, GDP and fixed assets for 42 countries in Europe from 1870 to 2020, also with uncertainty bounds for defined hazard zones. The code in this repository requires input data stored in another repository (see metadata). The output maps are also stored separately;

(b) reproduces some of the data preparation for flood impact data calculation;

(c) generates a model flood catalogue of coastal, riverine, and compound floods, including footprints, damage estimates, and validation, for 42 countries in Europe from 1950 to 2020;

(d) generates estimates of flood protection and vulnerability levels, for individual events and at subnational regions, 1950 to 2020;

(e) impact attribution model for generating event-based counterfactual impact data considering changes in hazard, exposure and vulnerability relative to 1950.

More functionalities will be added in future versions.

V2.0.1: a correction was made to disaggregation of GDP, as the code incorrectly used 50:50 ratio of labour to capital instead of 60:40 ratio as in the methodology. The output GDP and uncertainty files were recomputed;

V2.1: adds scripts related with historical impact data preparation;

V2.2: adds code for generating a flood catalogue;

V2.3: adds code for estimating flood protection and vulnerability;

V2.4: adds code for impact attribution.
