  • 1. ROR icon Birkbeck, University of London
  • 2. Opening the Future

Description

This presentation was delivered to the Publishers Association of South Africa - Scholarly Committee on 22 May 2024. The slides address the practical and technical questions surrounding OA book publishing. The presenters disscuss the different OA funding models available, before highlighting the work of Thoth, Open Book Collective, and Opening the Future (Copim community initiatives). In particular, the presentation focuses on Opening the Future (Otf): a library subscription membership programme whereby a press provides gated access to portions of their (closed) backlist books at a special price, and then uses the revenue from members’ subscriptions to allow the frontlist to be OA from the date of publication. Presenters explain how OtF works, the benefits it offers publishers and libraries, and the plans for the model's future.
