THOR - the rock strength database
Description
Thor is an extensive and (nearly) exhaustive rock strength compilation based on publications from 1980 - 2024 (Scopus). Data reported in Thor includes:
- Search tool and watershed erodibility calculator: A Microsoft Excel®-based tool that enables users to select specific lithologies and generate summary statistics. This tool also calculates watershed erodibility by accounting for lithologies and their respective proportions in a watershed.
- RN - rebound values (all converted to Schmidt Hammer model N), grouped by lithology.
- σUCS - uniaxial compressive strength (σUCS), grouped by lithology.
- LE - lithologic erodibility index (LE), grouped by lithology (also referred to as Klp in this database).
- Authors list - a list of all publications/references used in this compilation.

Technical info (English)
Rock strength values in this compilation are mainly based on site-averaged Schmidt Hammer measurements obtained in the field and the laboratory. Each "site" is composed of at least a few measurements (generally ≥ 10) averaged according to either ASTM or ISRM standards. In this compilation, all values are corrected to the horizontal following the recommendation of Basu & Aydin (2004), and corrections of the hammer energy and model (either L or N) are based on Aydin & Basu (2005). Values are converted to uniaxial compressive strength (σUCS, MPa) following Aydin & Basu (2005). In landscape evolution studies, erosion rates and topographic metrics may scale with rock strength through an lithologic erodibility index (LE). Here, LE is reported as ∝ σUCS⁻² (Sklar & Dietrich, 2001; Turowski et al., 2023). Lithology is classified according to original publications and data is further differentiated whenever possible.
