Description

The aim of this article is to stress the importance of collaboration between disciplines and with communities in order to study issues of social acceptability. To reach this aim, this paper draws lessons from “Geothermal resources for energy transition: Building capacity through engagement with northern communities”, a two-year ongoing project designed by geothermal researchers to understand the social acceptability of geothermal energy in northern Canada through two-way capacity. Collaboration between geothermal researchers and social scientists facilitated informative exchanges with community members despite several challenges, such as the poor image that some Indigenous communities have of Western scientists, and the research fatigue these communities regularly experience. The interdisciplinary approach is essential to design a solid research protocol adapted to each community, engage research participants, and run the project.
