YENİ İSTANBUL ULUSLARARASI ÖĞRENCİLER İÇİN TÜRKÇE DERS KİTAPLARININ İSTANBUL KÜLTÜRÜNÜ YANSITMASINA GENEL BİR BAKIŞ

Description

Culture is an aspect that should not be neglected in language teaching. Language education that is not grounded in cultural context lacks a solid foundation, and the comprehensiveness and depth of what is learned will be insufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate culture into education through textbooks. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the cultural elements related to Istanbul present in the New Istanbul Turkish for International Students Textbooks and to reveal their contribution to the teaching of the target language. The reason for limiting the study to Istanbul culture is that the examined textbook focuses on Istanbul as a location and frequently uses Istanbul's socio-cultural elements both visually and textually. In this context, cultural elements reflecting Istanbul in A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 level textbooks were scanned according to predetermined cultural criteria, categorized by levels, and interpreted. The function of introducing Istanbul culture and its contribution to the learning processes of language learners were discussed. This research is qualitative and utilized document analysis. The study concluded that cultural elements related to Istanbul are present in the textbooks to varying degrees across different levels, but they are not systematically organized and lack comprehensiveness. At the beginner levels, elements reflecting Istanbul are more abundant, especially with a heavy use of visual elements. However, the cultural references in written and spoken expressions are more superficial. As the levels progress, cultural elements are presented in more depth, but their quantity decreases, corresponding with the increased language proficiency of the students.
