InBestSoil Handbook for soil sampling procedures and methodologies for the measurment of soil health indicators
Creators
Description
InBestSoil project aims to co-create a framework for investment in the conservation and recovery of soil health by developing an economic valuation system of the ecosystem services delivered by healthy soil, the impacts of soil interventions, and its incorporation into business models and incentives. This will allow public and private organizations to give economic value to their actions over soil health, co-design strategies with local stakeholders, and work collectively to deliver national and EU policy
ambitions. For this purpose, InBestSoil has selected different case studies, which provide a total of nine study areas across four biogeographic regions from Europe (Boreal, Continental, Atlantic, and Mediterranean) and four different land uses (agriculture, forest, urban, mining), as models for co-creation and co-design (multi-actor approach, responsible research and innovation, and open science).
After the co-selection of the most appropriate indicators to determine soil health in each case studies under a participatory
consultation, the soil will be collected in all of them. The values of the soil health indicators, representing different ecosystem
services in which soil is involved, will be the base for the economic valuation of these ecosystem services, using market and non-market valuation methods.
Thus, it is necessary to define a series of standardised methodologies that allow for the attainment of comparable results for all selected soil health indicators. This handbook covers all the methods used for this purpose in the InBestSoil project, specifically in Work Package 3. Each chapter of the handbook includes a first section with a slight explanation of the indicator to be measured, followed by a list with the necessary materials, a step-by-step explanation of the procedure, the calculations required, and a series of essential tips or points to improve the process.
