The growth of Research Software Engineering and its vital role in research

Research software is critical for much of modern research. Over the past 12 years the research software engineering (RSE) role has been established, combining an intimate understanding of research with professional software engineering expertise. This talk discusses the growth and evolution of the RSE role and RSE groups in the UK and the spread of these to other countries and regions globally, the current state of the RSE profession, and the challenges that still remain for RSE and other "non traditional" research roles.
