A report on the perceived educational gaps among craft-makers
Description
Starting at the beginning of the Hephaestus Project, we analysed craft-makers’ perceived educational gaps across ecosystems in Bassano del Grappa and Venice, Italy; Bornholm, Denmark; and Dals Långed, Sweden. Aiming to identify relevant skills for craft careers and methods for acquiring these skills, the project's findings will guide further work in Work Package 4. Initial research included a theoretical review of craft skills literature and similar European projects, leading to a new framework categorizing craft skills into five macro-categories. Interviews in Italy and Sweden provided deep insights into craft skills and careers, while an online questionnaire targeted European craft-makers. Efforts to disseminate the questionnaire included collaboration with Hephaestus partners, local craft associations, and networks from other craft-focused European projects, carefully balancing engagement with the need to maintain positive relationships between universities, mediators, and craft-makers. The report will be updated twice to include ongoing questionnaire results. A co-creation workshop in March 2024 in Dals Långed with local craft ambassadors offered a platform to share and validate preliminary findings with craft-makers, focusing on education, skills, and the profession's future. Craft-makers acknowledge the lack in business, communication, and sales skills, vital for their success, and express a preference for outsourcing areas like accounting, legal advice, and digital marketing. This scenario presents opportunities for business and communication specialists to offer tailored services and for educational institutions to develop courses addressing these gaps, enhancing craft-makers' professional development.
