Bevis Marks Prosopography 1767-1802

Description

The Bevis Marks Prosopography (1767-1802) (“BMP Dataset”) was created by Ali Erginsoy as part of his research for a dissertation entitled ‘Keeping the faithful: Poverty, welfare and cohesion in the London Sephardic community, 1767-1802’, submitted to The Open University in January 2024 for the degree of M.A. in History.

The study combines a family reconstitution of the London Sephardic community, more commonly known as Bevis Marks, after the street on which the community’s synagogue was inaugurated in 1701, with relief and synagogal tax data from Bevis Marks’s Annual Accounts between 1767 and 1802. This is the first time such a methodology has been applied to a study of the London Sephardic community. Moreover, the author believes that it is also the first dataset combining a family reconstitution with welfare data for a population in late eighteenth century London.
