Praktisch alle Umfragen erfassen grundlegende soziodemographische Merkmale. Während es für entsprechende Fragebogenitems etablierte Empfehlungen gibt, mangelt es an Standards für soziodemographische Variablen in Umfragedaten. Diese Lücke versucht das KonsortSWD-Teilprojekt „Harmonisierte Variablen“ zu füllen. Dieses Dokument beschreibt näher, was soziodemographische Standardvariablen sind, wie sie aufgebaut sind, und wie das Projekt bei ihrer Entwicklung vorgegangen ist. Außerdem dokumentiert es Validierungsergebnisse für die Merkmale, bei denen eine Validierung konkurrierender Kandidatinnen für Standardvariablen sinnvoll erschien. In Anhang 1 werden 32 Standardvariablen zu 19 soziodemographischen Merkmalen spezifiziert, die entweder von einzelnen Forschenden oder von Forschungsdatenzentren umgesetzt werden können. Im Verlauf der kommenden Jahre werden die Standard-Fragebogenitems und Standardvariablen für die einzelnen Merkmale zusätzlich gemeinsam im Open Access Repositorium für sozial- und verhaltenswissenschaftliche Messinstrumente ZIS (www.zis.gesis.org) dokumentiert werden.

Practically all surveys record basic socio-demographic characteristics. While there are established recommendations for corresponding questionnaire items, there is a lack of standards for socio-demographic variables in survey data. The KonsortSWD sub-project "harmonized variables" attempts to fill this gap. This document describes in more detail what socio-demographic standard variables are, how they are constructed, and how the project proceeded with their development. It also documents validation results for those characteristics for which a validation of competing candidates for standard variables appeared useful. Appendix 1 specifies 32 standard variables for 19 socio-demographic characteristics that can be implemented either by individual researchers or by research data centres. Over the coming years, the standard questionnaire items and standard variables for the individual characteristics will also be documented jointly in the open access repository for social and behavioural science measurement instruments ZIS (www.zis.gesis.org).
