The intangible cultural heritage of Karaghiozis and the celebrations of 2021 in times of pandemic
Description
Shadow theatre is a living part of the intangible cultural heritage of Greece. Its heroic plays, inspired by the Greek revolution of 1821, are one of the main categories of performances, which differentiates it from its Ottoman relative. The shadow theatre group called "The Tales of Karagiozis" is located in Xanthi, Thrace and participates in various events throughout Greece. The group planned and implemented diverse activities, as part of the Bicentennial anniversary, despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, and, like the cunning Karagiozis who always finds solutions, brought the barefoot hero in 2021, in collaboration with other cultural associations. Within this paper, there are references to: a) a new performance, created by our group for the Greek revolution and presented to school classes, b) a lecture given to teachers on how to incorporate local history (e.g. regarding the contribution of Domna Visvizi in the Greek revolution) in new plays performed by pupils, c) the section of the travelling exhibition "All arts for Karagiozis", which presented figures and sculptural compositions inspired by the heroic plays and, d) the proposal submitted to the committee 'Greece 2021' for the creation of theme parks with shadow theatre figures also inspired by heroic plays.
