4. Smilax quadrata De Candolle (1878: 183). (Fig. 6)

Lectotype (designated by Koyama 1963: 55 as “holotype”, corrected here):— INDIA. Assam: Khasia Hills, s.d., Hooker fil & Thomson 13, K000820896 (K, digital image!). Syntypes:— INDIA. East Bengal: Khasia, s.d., Griffith 5427 K000820895 (K, digital image!), INDIA. s.loc., s.d., Griffith 5452 G00382270 (G, digital image!)

Distribution:— CHINA, INDIA, MYANMAR

Notes:— Smilax quadrata was described by Alphonse De Candolle in 1878 based on three gatherings from Khasia India Orientalis (Hooker and Thomson 13, Griffith 5247, and Griffith 5452). The discrepancy between the collection number stated in the protologue, which is 5247, and the number on the sheet, which is 5427, indicates a correctable error.

While searching for the type specimens of S. quadrata, we found that they are housed at K and G. Koyama (1963) selected ‘Hooker and Thomson 13’ of K as holotype. However, the use of the term holotype is an error to be corrected to lectotype, following article 9.10 of the ICN (done here). This is considered here as an effective lectotypification by Koyama, following Article 7.11 of ICN (Turland et al. 2018).
