Air interface for 5G: PHY design based on pulse shaped OFDM

In this paper, we present pulse shaped OFDM as an enabler for a flexible PHY design of the air interface for 5G. After introducing the waveform details and its degrees of freedom provided for the system design, we describe the suitable parameterizations to be considered for addressing the diverse requirements envisaged for future 5G systems, which are derived from the broad range of services and frequencies to be supported. Some performance results for selected scenarios underpin the superior performance of pulse shaped OFDM compared to conventional OFDM systems.
