  "abstract": "<p>This paper proposes a simple, but efficient solution\u00a0to avoid a potential problem for filtered OFDM (F-OFDM) that<br>\nmay violate regular resource grid structure. F-OFDM is an\u00a0extension of OFDM by additional per-subband filtering and a<br>\nwell-localized filter can be utilized to significantly lower the out-of-band radiation that can mitigate interference in asynchronous\u00a0access. Even with the filtering, additional guard bands that carry\u00a0no data may be needed between the subbands for different users\u00a0to keep the interference level sufficiently low. The required guard\u00a0bandwidth may vary since various aspects should be taken into\u00a0account such as interference power, modulation format or quality\u00a0of service requirement. If the subbands are simply shifted to add\u00a0the guard bands, the regular resource grid will be destroyed. One\u00a0option to keep the regular resource grid while supporting flexible\u00a0guard bands is to define several filters, each of which is optimized\u00a0for each possible guard bandwidth. But this is rather complex.\u00a0We propose a much simpler solution allocating the guard bands\u00a0inside the filter bandwidth, which is kept independent of guard\u00a0bandwidths. We show through detailed analytical and numerical\u00a0analysis that the proposed solution performs even better than the\u00a0more complex one in practically relevant interference scenarios.</p>",
