Type locality: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Synonyms: Cerapus brasiliensis (Dana, 1853); Cerapus rapax (Stimpson, 1857); Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853); Ericthonius (Pyctilus) brasiliensis Dana, 1853; Ericthonius bidens Costa, 1853; Ericthonius disjunctus Stout, 1913; Ericthonius latimanus Grube, 1864; Ericthonius minax S.I. Smith, 1873; Ericthonius rapax Stimpson, 1857.

Distribution. World: Brazil (Dana 1853), North Atlantic Ocean (Bellan-Santini & Costello 2001), Caribbean Sea, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba (Miloslavich et al. 2010), India (Nayar 1959).

India: Western India Ecoregion: Arabian Sea (Surya Rao 1972 as Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853));

South India Ecoregion: Tamil Nadu (Nayar 1966 as Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853); Sivaprakasam 1970d); Eastern India Ecoregion: Tamil Nadu (Nayar 1959 as Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853); Sivaprakasam 1970d; Lyla et al. 1998; Venkataraman 2007; Mondal et al. 2010; Thilagavathi et al. 2013 as Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853)); Northern Bay of Bengal: Bay of Bengal (Surya Rao 1972 as Erichthonius brasiliensis (Dana, 1853)).
