This folder contains the dataset accompanying Ashcroft, Karoly and Gergis (2013): A historical climate dataset for southeastern Australia, 1788–1859, Geosciences Data Journal (submitted). SEA_historical_climate_data_originals.dir contains the original digitised data for 38 of the 39 historical southeastern Australian climate data sources described in Ashcroft et al. (2013). Data are provided in .csv format. The number of each source corresponds to the number given in Table 1 of the publication. The PDF file "metadata" contains detailed information about the location of the original documents containing each data source, the observation method and instrumentation used, and any biases identified in the observations. This file also contains a copy of Table 1 from Ashcroft et al. (2013). Digitised data for all sources are provided, except the data from William Wyatt (source 20 in Table 1), which was provided by Tony Rogers from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology South Australian regional office. Other notes: * All temperature data are in degrees Fahrenheit unless otherwise stated. * All pressure data are station level pressure and are given in inches of mercury unless otherwise stated. * All rainfall data are in inches unless otherwise stated. * Missing values are given by -99 or -99.99. * Images of the original data can be provided on request (lindenashcroft@gmail.com). eastern_SEA_monthly_seasonal_aves.dir and southern_SEA_monthly_seasonal_aves.dir contains monthly and seasonal anomalies of Tmax and Tmin (estimated from fixed-hourly observations as described in the above publication), rainfall, MSLP and rainday for eastern and southern SEA, 1788–1859. Anomalies have been calculated relative to 1910–1950 gridded and observational data, and then standardised to zero before being combined.
