abstract
This article deals with the introduction of synchronic linguistics in Greek linguistics in the 1970s and with the subsequent re-organization of the discipline in Greek universities. Through an investigation into hitherto under-studied material (e. g. university archives, yearbooks, syllabi, etc.), we provide a detailed description of the shift from historical to synchronic linguistics. Moreover, our thesis is that this change was influenced by the socio-historical conditions and ideologies that characterized Greek society during that period. Finally, given that in 1976 the Greek ‘language question’ was resolved, we explore how the reorientation of Greek linguistics towards the study of the present of the Modern Greek language interacted with the robust language ideologies of Greek academia, namely of the two main universities (of Athens and of Thessaloniki).
