Description

abstract
This contribution focuses on the organization of the study of Chinese in France in the 19th century. It will rely on the creation of Chinese Chairs in two privileged institutions: the Collège de France and the École spéciale des langues orientales (Special School for Oriental Languages). By analyzing the conditions that made them possible and the characteristics of linguistic research that may be found in them, we will try to clarify the complex relationships between knowledge, power and institution. Through the term “sinology”, around which research on China and the Chinese language was organized, we will also reflect on the notion of scientific discipline and its historicity.
