Gymnocanthus galeatus Bean 1881
Description
Gymnocanthus galeatus Bean, 1881.
Armorhead Sculpin. To 49 cm (19.3 in) TL (Tokranov and Orlov 2012). Northern Sea of Japan off Hokkaido, and Kuril Islands to Commander–Aleutian Chain, and Bering Sea as far north as Norton Sound, and Saint Lawrence Island (Mecklenburg et al. 2016) to Wales Island, British Columbia (Peden and Wilson 1976). Benthic; depth: intertidal to 625 m (2,050 ft) (min.: Mecklenburg et al. 2016; max.: Allen and Smith 1988). The author and publication date are sometimes given in parentheses, which would indicate the species is classified in a genus other than that in which it was originally described. However, Gymnocanthus was misspelled Gymnacanthus in the original species description and changing from the incorrect to the correct spelling is just a correction, not a move to another genus.
