CO2 Capture, Utilisation and/or Storage (CCUS) technologies are essential for the decarbonisation of industry. However, the deployment of full-chain CCUS, which must also include CO2 transport, is influenced by international, national and regional legal and regulatory frameworks. These affect the costs of CCUS so policy must be appropriately designed to financially incentivise large-scale deployment.
\nThis policy brief therefore argues that national climate strategic targets of all countries should be aligned to the goals of the Paris Agreement, and CCUS technology should be included in the list of technological priorities together with renewables and other decarbonisation options in the national regulation of each country. Additional CCUS regulations and political incentives, as well as national, industrial and EU financial support, are needed to initiate and support large-scale CCUS projects.

This brief is geared towards policymakers at national and European Commission level, involved with designing national and international policies related to CCUS, as well as research funding organisations.

The cement industry is a key-sector for the reduction of CO2 emissions. CO2 generation in cement production processes in fact, cannot be disregarded due to the calcination of limestone (CaCO3 dissociated to CaO and CO2), the most important raw material. According to IEA and ZEP studies, cement industry should contribute to the largest CO2 emission reduction through CCS in Europe, in order to meet the target of 2°C of global temperature increase (IEA ‘2DS scenario’).
\r\n\r\nCLEANKER is coordinated by LEAP and integrates 13 research organizations from seven countries: five representatives from the academia, three research centres, one SME, one technology provider, two end users and one environmental organization.
\r\n\r\nCLEANKER aims at demonstrating at TRL7 the Calcium Looping (CaL) concept, one of the most promising technologies for CO2 capture in cement plants, in a configuration highly integrated with the cement production process, making use of entrained flow reactors. The CLEANKER core activity is the design, construction and operation of a CaL demonstration system that will capture the CO2 from a portion of the flue gas of the cement plant in Vernasca (Italy) operated by Buzzi Unicem, using as CO2 sorbent the same raw meal used for clinker production.

\n\nThe overall objective of REALISE project is to develop a refinery-centred sector-coupling strategy to enable full-chain CCUS implementation, by demonstrating technologies to lower the cost of CO2 capture by at least 30% and increase the overall rate of CO2 capture to 90% by solving technical barriers, as well as developing recommendations for policy and regulatory changes to overcome societal, political and socio-economic barriers.

\nAny user may submit a record directly to the EU Open Research Repository. The submission will be moderated by Zenodo staff for compliance with the minimal required metadata requirements and its correctness.
\nRecords found among Zenodo’s existing content will on a regular basis automatically be integrated if they are found to comply with the requirements. The submissions through this method are integrated into the EU Open Research Repository with delay in a fully automated way.
\nRecords in the EU Open Research Repository are required to comply with the following minimal metadata requirements:
\nVisibility: Both public and restricted (with or without embargo and/or access request)
\nResource types: All resource types.
\nLicenses: Public and embargoed records MUST specify a license.
\nFunding information: Records MUST specify at least one grant from the European Commission.
\nCreators: Creators SHOULD be identified with a persistent identifier (e.g. ORCID, GND, …), and affiliations SHOULD be identified with a persistent identifier (e.g. ROR, ISNI, …)
