  <dc:description>We present the PLATO Input Catalogue, from which the targets to be monitored by the PLATO mission will be extracted, and discuss the procedure we are following to optimize the selection of the long pointing fields for the mission. The preliminary position of these fields is described so that the community can start with preparatory observations well before the launch of the observatory. </dc:description>
