{ "description": "
Associations between sensory features of different natures are defined as crossmodal correspondences.
\nIn the context of size perception, low pitch sound frequencies are often associated with
\nlarger objects and high pitch with smaller objects. Here we investigate such crossmodal correspondences
\nin sighted and visually-impaired children. In Experiment 1, after listening to sounds
\n(250–5000 Hz pure tones), children aged 6–11 years were asked to draw a circle "as big as the
\nsound was". In Experiment 2, children aged 6–14 years who were blind or had low vision performed
\na similar task. In accordance with previous research, we observed that the circle size
\ndrawn depends on participants’ age and we confirm the presence of pitch-size associations in
\nsighted children. In visually-impaired children, such associations are influenced by residual
\nvision, suggesting an anchoring of size perception to level of residual vision. These results reveal
\nnovel dynamics underlying the advancing of visual loss and the emergence of compensatory
\nmechanisms in childhood.
", "license": "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode", "creator": [ { "affiliation": "Unit for Visually impaired people", "@type": "Person", "name": "Luigi Cuturi" }, { "affiliation": "Unit for Visually impaired people", "@type": "Person", "name": "Giulia Cappagli" }, { "affiliation": "Unit for Visually impaired people", "@type": "Person", "name": "Alessia Tonelli" }, { "affiliation": "Istituto David Chiossone", "@type": "Person", "name": "Elena Cocchi" }, { "affiliation": "Unit for Visually impaired people", "@type": "Person", "name": "Monica Gori" } ], "headline": "Perceiving size through sound in sighted and visually impaired children", "image": "https://zenodo.org/static/img/logos/zenodo-gradient-round.svg", "datePublished": "2021-09-24", "url": "https://zenodo.org/record/5595904", "@context": "https://schema.org/", "identifier": "https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5595904", "@id": "https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5595904", "@type": "ScholarlyArticle", "name": "Perceiving size through sound in sighted and visually impaired children" }
