  "abstract": "<p>The work presents a collaborative design\u00a0approach, developed to account for the\u00a0structure flexibility effects in the pre-design\u00a0stages of generic aircraft configurations. A\u00a0streamlined design process is developed\u00a0between DLR and TU Delft, to support the transition from an initial aircraft conceptual solution, to physics based simulations. The TU\u00a0Delft DEE initiator is the conceptual tool\u00a0providing the initial design, which is used to\u00a0instantiate further analysis tool. An Aeroelastic\u00a0Engine module is responsible for the\u00a0abstraction of the aircraft structural properties,\u00a0and the generation of the fluid-structure\u00a0disciplinary couplings, necessary to account for\u00a0the flexibility effects. Multiple distributed\u00a0disciplinary solvers are available, and\u00a0accessible via a decentralized architecture. All\u00a0the analysis modules are integrated in the\u00a0design workflow by means of the open source\u00a0distributed framework RCE, and the DLR\u2019s\u00a0central data model CPACS. The approach is\u00a0tested for the pre-design of a conventional\u00a0aircraft and a box-wing configuration, designed\u00a0for a set of top level aircraft requirements.\u00a0Hence, the flexibility effects for both cases are\u00a0presented. The results demonstrate the\u00a0importance of accounting for the flexibility\u00a0effects already in the pre-design phase,\u00a0especially in case of box-wing configurations,\u00a0where difference in design performance can\u00a0occur when ignoring such effects.</p>",
