Description

Genus Eugerda Meinert 1890

Type species. Eugerda tenuimana (G. O. Sars, 1868)

Diagnosis. Desmosomatinae with biramous uropod, exopod always well developed. Pleotelson without posterolateral spines. First pereonite shorter than the second pereonite. First pereopod slightly or moderately reduced, carpus lacking major setae. Carpus of second pereopod broad, often with a comb of small spines distoventrally. Sexual dimorphism pronounced, in copulatory male posterior three pereonites and pleotelson with marginal ¯anges. Coxae of ®rst pereopod moderately produced.

Remarks. The genus is closely related to the genus Desmosoma.

Material examined. Identi®ed male, length 2.6 mm, width 1.0 mm.

Locality. Carolina slope at 620 m, Eastward Sta. G-29 (4931).

Diagnosis. Eugerda with ®rst pereonite strongly reduced. Copulatory male with anterior and posterior corner of ®fth pereonite and pleotelson all rounded. Antennula with a ¯agellum of four articles. First pereopod slender, merus short, carpus broader and longer than propodus, both bearing long setae. Coxae of ®rst pereopod not produced anteriorly. Uropod biramous, exopod much shorter than endopod.

Remarks. The present record of this species oOE North Carolina is the southernmost location for this North Atlantic boreal, bathyal species. Originally this species was collected during the Danish Ingolf expedition at 1065 m at lat. 63ss30¾N and long. 54ss25¾W. Subsequently Russian carcinologist Professor O. Kussakin collected it from the Grand Banks at 850 m at lat. 44ss56.9¾N and long. 48ss53.3¾W (Hessler, 1970). This same species was collected at six diOEerent stations between 200 and 1102 m in the Gay Head± Bermuda transect (Hessler, 1970).
