{ "description": "
People communicate using speech, gestures, and, less frequently, touches. An example of tactile
\ncommunication is represented by handshake. Customs surrounding handshake vary in different
\ncultures. In Western societies is mostly used when meeting, parting, as a sign of congratulations or at
\nthe end of a successful business. Despite its importance in social life, the neural mechanism underlying
\nthe affective components conveyed by handshake (“tactile vitality forms”) is unknown. Here we
\ncombined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electromyography (EMG), to investigate
\nthe neural affective activations during handshakes. We demonstrated that handshake conveying
\ngentle or aggressive tactile vitality forms produces a stronger activation of the dorso-central insula.
\nThe simultaneous presence of emotional facial expressions modulates the activation of this insular
\nsector. Finally, we provide evidence that the cingulate cortex is involved in the processing of facial
\nexpressions conveying different vitality forms.
", "license": "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode", "creator": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Rizzolatti, Giacomo" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "D'Alessio, Andrea" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Marchi, Massimo" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Di Cesare, Giuseppe" } ], "headline": "The neural bases of tactile vitality forms and their modulation by social context", "image": "https://zenodo.org/static/img/logos/zenodo-gradient-round.svg", "datePublished": "2021-04-27", "url": "https://zenodo.org/record/4736507", "@context": "https://schema.org/", "identifier": "https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-021-87919-z", "@id": "https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-021-87919-z", "@type": "ScholarlyArticle", "name": "The neural bases of tactile vitality forms and their modulation by social context" }
