Distribution. Western Atlantic—Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, Argentina (Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Scarabino 2006; Coelho et al. 2007; Nucci & Melo 2007; Alves et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009; Fransozo et al. 2011; Meireles et al. 2012; Spivak et al. 2019).

Remarks. Morphological variation in the length of antennal peduncles between populations of Pagurus criniticornis from the northern and southern hemisphere raised doubts about its true distribution (Nucci & Melo 2007), and about its taxonomic status. Remarkable individual variations were reported by Forest & Saint Laurent (1968). A preliminary molecular phylogeny revealed close relationship among South American species of the “ provenzanoi ” clade, including P. criniticornis (Olguín & Mantelatto 2013). Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB779—16S (DQ369947), CCDB 463—COI (MF490059) (Mantelatto et al. 2006, 2018).
